Bexar County, DEC Win Top Public Works Award

HOUSTON, Texas, July 11, 2022 -- Bexar County and DEC have been honored with a 2022 Project of the Year Award from the Texas Public Works Association (TPWA). The county’s Talley Road Mobility Enhancement and Flood Mitigation project took top honors in the category for transportation projects in the $5 million-$25 million range.

DEC, a premiere Texas civil engineering firm known for delivering engineering excellence, was lead design and construction management engineer for the project that improved roadway mobility and safety, mitigated flood risks, and provided pedestrian facilities to communities in northwest Bexar County.

The Bexar County Public Works Department initiated the $16 million project to address significant development and population growth, as well as storm-related flooding.

Completed in February, the project transformed 3 miles of two-lane rural roadway with open drainage ditches into a five-lane roadway with bike lanes, curbs and gutters. Based on hydraulic and hydrology analysis, DEC also designed a storm water management system to alleviate flooding impacts on area residents.

Bexar County and DEC representatives accepted the award at the 2022 TPWA conference in June. TPWA is the Texas chapter of the American Public Works Association. The awards recognize excellence in the management and administration of public works projects. Judges select winning projects that demonstrate excellence in construction management, cost controls, community relations, safety performance and other criteria.
